Spring is right around the corner and so is the world famous Boston Marathon. Not everyone remembers this but the Boston Marathon was not always a race with big prize money for the winners. In fact the winners of our marathon used to get nothing more than a laurel wreath very similar to the one in the Club logo. Runners would train all year and run 26 miles to win this prestigious event and the coveted Laurel Wreath. That was it. Why you ask? For the love of the sport, for the love of the race, and because it was a formidable challenge to win. The world is in love with this race today in part because of it's humble beginnings and the fact that people ran it for the love of the sport.

So what does running a marathon have to do with making wine. Runners typically don't drink wine while they are training or running. Well here's the thing...homemade wine makers don't enter this competition for fame or prizes but because they love to make wine and they want people to taste it and enjoy their wine. Sure, if they win a medal there certainly is a sense of pride that goes with winning a competition, think laurel wreath, but their love is in the making and nurturing of it and the smiles it produces on the drinkers face. At home the consumer is a small audience like a husband, wife, parent, adult children and friends but at our competition it's 350 fellow enthusiasts that reassure them that their skill is intact and they are producing something that warms the heart and flourishes on the palette. So remember that our Wine Feast is not so much about the glory of victory as much as it is about the passion for the art itself. It's a craft that deserves to be displayed and perpetuated for generations to come.

The Fourteenth Annual Homemade Wine Feast is Saturday March 14th at 6:45pm at Raffaels Banquet Facility in Walpole Mass. Tasting room closes at 8pm and dinner, dancing and more homemade wine will be available until the last dance at midnight. Tickets are still on sale at Beer and Wine Hobby in Woburn, Ma or call Marisa by telephone at 617-966-5606. Tickets are $80 per person. You must be 21 or older to taste wines.
